Training materials were developed by the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at the University of N. Carolina at Chapel Hill

Module 10
(30 Minutes)

Wrapping it Up with a
Change of Practice Plan

Purpose:

This module is the final of 10 modules of training on Literacy
for Students with Significant Disabilities. Now, participants will have a chance to think about everything they have learned and create a plan for changing or adding to their current practices based on the things they’ve learned.

In the modules, participants learned about theories of literacy as they relate to students with significant disabilities, and the connections between oral and written language development.  Throughout the training, the knowledge and skills were applied to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in Reading, Writing, and English.  Participants learned a range of assessment and intervention strategies that they’ll be able to use to support the needs of the students with significant disabilities they teach.

Module 9

Fluency

Purpose:

This module provides an overview of fluency and how it can be taught students with significant disabilities. Most often, the word fluency is used to describe oral reading fluency, but there is an important connection between oral and silent reading fluency. Whether it is oral or silent, fluency is the ability to read accurately and quickly. Fluency involves reading with expression in a natural manner, and it requires accurate and automatic reading of individual words as well as the ability to group words together to support meaning.
