Region III Education Service Center, in partnership with Region XI ESC in Fort Worth, is pleased to offer web-based library automation as part of the 2008 - 2009 Contracted Services.  The SirsiDynix Symphony system, used by state library consortiums, academic library systems, and large public library systems, is the automation program being offered.

The contracted service will allow a district's library catalog to be accessed through an internet connection by faculty, parents, and students.  The yearly fee includes the software, server, server licensing, software licensing, training, technical support, data conversions, uploads, cataloging, and new-record creation.  Additionally, a textbook management program and asset management program are included in the base package price.  The program supports existing library barcodes and most handheld scanners will be compatible with the new system, requiring only software uploads.

The system has a number of advantages over current

desktop-based library automation systems, including:

¬  24-hour access to library catalog through Internet

¬  Frees technology staff from performing server maintenance, troubleshooting, installing upgrades, etc.

¬  Provides a sophisticated, robust automation program for a fraction of the cost of purchasing it individually

¬  No servers to repair or replace

¬  Age-appropriate interfaces for both elementary and secondary students

¬  Creates a regional library catalog with inter-library loan capabilities utilizing the route delivery service already in place, allowing for optimal use of resources

¬  A full-time staff member who concentrates only on server and technical support of program

¬  Both on-site and off-site back ups of data

¬  Online textbook management program that can be structured multiple ways, reducing textbook losses

¬  Library cataloging is included in fee

¬  Circulation program can operate off-line if internet connectivity is lost-when connection is reestablished, the server will automatically synchronize with the system

¬  Moving to a web-based program supports 21st Century Skills, using the web as a work tool, not simply as an information source.
