4th - 8th grade Literacy Professional Learning Cohort

  • The 4th - 8th Reading and Writing Cohort is designed to align reading and writing instruction to match the state standards. Teachers will learn to implement STAAR mini lessons in authentic reading and writing. Teachers will be taught how to effectively set up, manage, and integrate reader’s and writer’s workshop into their instruction in order to improve student learning outcomes by bridging authentic learning experiences.

    • Teachers will submit 3 written artifacts
    • Teachers will attend the end of the year Share session:  “Celebrating our Success”
    • Unlimited implementation support and technical assistance via email or telephone.
    • Campus administration may attend at no cost

    • Job Embedded PD: Where are We Going - Curriculum Roadmap aligned to TEKS & Setting Up Workshop (Routines, Procedures, & Expectations)

    SEPTEMBER

    • Job Embedded PD Implementing reading workshop
    • Teaching students to pick a book that is “just right” for them
    • Designing a Mini Lesson (I do, We do, You do)
    • Implementing Choice Boards
    • Conducting reading conferences (utilizing teacher annotations, rubrics, and spreadsheets as informal/subjective assessments.)
    • Session 1 Face-to-Face Coaching Session
    • Feedback over workshop routines, procedures, expectations, conferencing, informal assessments

    OCTOBER

    • Job Embedded PD Implementing Writing workshop
    • Utilizing mentor texts and mentor sentences in mini lessons
    • Designing a Mini Lesson (I do, We do, You do)
    • Building writing fluency through journaling
    • Implementing Choice Boards
    • Peer editing
    • Conducting writing conferences (utilizing teacher annotations, rubrics, and spreadsheets as informal/subjective assessments.
    • Session 2 Face-to-Face Coaching Session: Feedback over implementation of reading and writing workshop

    NOVEMBER

    • Zoom PLC mini lesson artifact submission for feedback
    • Face-to-Face Coaching: Observation/feedback

    DECEMBER

    • Article review over researched best practice for reader’s and writers’ workshop
    • Submission of a reader’s response artifact over the article

    JANUARY

    • Job Embedded PD: Data driven instruction utilizing informal and formal assessments
      • Student self-progress monitoring aligned to assessments
    • Session 3 Face-to-Face coaching: Feedback over use of formal and informal assessments and student self-progress

    FEBRUARY

    • Webinar: Effective STAAR Review
    • Artifact of an effective STAAR Review that his been researched and/or implemented in the classroom.
    • PLC Zoom over STAAR Review artifacts

    MARCH

    • Webinar: Power Book Talks and how to use them as mentor texts and design of mini lesson 

    APRIL

    • PLC Zoom: Book Share

    MAY

    • PLC Zoom: Share Your Success
    • Submit & Analyze EOY Data
